There was a time, a century and a half ago and earlier when corporation served a public purpose and allowed us to do things
(educate children, house the sick) that might not get done if individuals and small groups had to do them alone. They were called "trusts" with some justification.

When Rockefeller created Standard Oil under the trust laws of New Jersey, he forever changed the nature and reputation of corporations. Peter Maurin was right on!

But credit unions are non-profit corporations, aren't they?

Btw, i guess i haven't read all the "easy essays." I am overjoyed when i read a new one. Thank you.

Problem with credit unions, they were originally community-based, mutual-interest, self-help institutions, but in recent decades they have evolved such that they're nearly indistinguishable from banks.

credit unions

Nothing is keeping people from forming their own credit unions which could operate for specific communities and their legitimate needs.
