My meeting with Zilboorg
During the meeting described in my entry for June 10, 2012 Dr. Zilboorg also made a comment about Dom James Fox, then abbot of Gethsemani. He described Dom James as "a homosexual type."
This remark was elaborated on by my friend, John Stanley, who will turn 91 in August. He was a novice at Gethsemani in the year 1950-51. He related to me that on more than one occasion Dom James kissed him on the mouth. This is just for the record and is in no way meant as any kind of inditement of Dom James nor as any kind of personal attack; he was always perfectly decent and
appropriate with me whenever I met with him. It was he who gave me a copy of Peter Maurin's "Easy Essays." Interestingly enough this book was soon afterward confiscated by my novice master, Father Herbert Seib, who evidently thought it inappropriate reading for me. He didn't explain why. Just for the record. Robert Steed

Dr. Zilbourg was certainly free in expressing his opinions of people. I don't think i would have liked being his patient.

He was ill then and probably knew he was going to die soon. RS
