Maryfarm, Newburgh, 1952
One morning up at Maryfarm
I came upon two deer
hoof deep in mist
that spread like pearl blue mulch
among the pepper plants.
I could have touched them
had I dared to lift my arm.
But I stood rooted, fast.
They stood still as air.
Then danced a little way away.
Stopped to look again,
dead level, total pause--
three PM in late July--
then, when they had looked,
and known, they turned,
and cantered down the hill.
